About

The WIB Innovation Internship Program is a partnership with high-potential start-ups to provide unique, business-oriented internships for WIB associates interested in entrepreneurship. This program streamlines the usually tedious process of searching for qualified interns by supplying start-ups with a pre-reviewed pool of applicants who are excited and invested in the opportunity to work at a startup. The mission of the program includes diversifying the start-up culture, inspiring the exploration of careers in innovation and  empowering women by providing interns with fundamental skills and experience to navigate these fields.

The Timeline

September 7th

WIB associates - Internship application deadline. Associates can only apply to 3 internship positions.

September 24th

Ventures - Submit all final results of acceptances and rejections to huwibpartnerships@gmail.com.

The Process

Stage One: Selecting the Ventures

Ventures need to submit an interest form here by August 1st, 2016. The WIB Innovation Committee will then conduct interviews with each Venture applicant and review all submissions to ensure a good fit between the venture and our program.

January 5th

WIB associates - Complete survey about internship experience.

Stage Two: Selecting the WIB Associates

After the final selection of ventures, WIB associates submit an application on this website. The application will consist of basic information, a resume, and a cover letter that is unique to each venture’s internship. Due to the interest in our membership,  the internship program will begin in the fall, but applications will open by mid-May.

Each company will review the applications and conduct interviews with the applicants to determine the offering of an internship opportunity.

Stage Three: Completing the Internship

After the internship, each WIB associate will be required to complete a survey, commenting on their overall experience at the start-up, their roles and responsibilities, and their satisfaction with the internship. Their recommendation will then be posted on HUWIB’s website under the name of each venture

Kynplex

Description: Founded at Harvard, Kynplex tackles the problem of inefficient communication in science by connecting innovators from science labs, companies, and funding agencies on a single platform. Kynplex connects hubs of innovation that are siloed by geographic region or research field, making it easy to share scientific information and form connections. Before we founded Kynplex, there was no efficient way to find relevant scientific information and connections. Groundbreaking findings are distributed through thousands of isolated scientific websites, journal publications and news releases. The lack of infrastructure means that scientific connections are limited to personal networks and chance encounters. By bringing together key innovators, Kynplex is the go-to place to identify scientific information and opportunities. The timing is ideal as large-scale initiatives like the national cancer moonshot are pushing for greater scientific collaboration. With an overarching vision and support from influential stakeholders, Kynplex can address this extraordinary opportunity and exponentially increase scientific impact. A VIP startup at the Harvard Innovation Lab, Kynplex has been featured in numerous media like the Boston Globe, NBC and the Huffington Post. Its co-founders Grace and Raul are both Thiel Fellows and have been named 25 under 25 startup founders by BostInno.   Internship Roles and Responsibilities:      1. Conduct market research to identify expansion and user acquisition opportunities      2. Identify potential customers and partners for Kynplex to explore      3. Conduct user interviews to get feedback about site features and customer needs      4. Assist with the marketing and PR strategy of Kynplex      5. Possibility to take on projects that match your interests and the priorities of Kynplex

ALEX

Description:  By 2018, 78% of all jobs will require education beyond high school, yet only 30% of the U.S. has a college education. Moreover, in the last 10 years, the cost of attending college has risen over 80%, outpacing housing and wage increases. While university training is meant to provide relevant skills to obtain jobs, workers cannot access the education necessary to adequately meet our future workforce needs. As a result, about 2M seats go unfilled every year in university classrooms across the U.S. Fortunately, colleges can utilize their excess capacity to increase access to higher education by offering empty seats as professional development training. ALEX is an online marketplace to serve that purpose. Professionals can advance their careers by taking individual higher education courses across universities and vocational programs. In a world where we can place people in empty seats in cars and in empty beds in houses, ALEX places people in empty seats in classrooms. We improve access to higher education by allowing workers to take courses one at a time. In addition, ALEX is building a recommendation engine to reengage ‘dropouts’ by suggesting courses based on previous classes taken, successful alumni learning pathways, and career preferences. We are applying data and analytics to student data in order to increase student retention and engagement. ALEX enables learners to select courses that fit with their budget, schedule, and goals which allows schools to monetize their excess capacity. Unlocking higher education through professional development training will change lives by facilitating access to quality learning experiences and strong communities while improving employability and earnings potential.  Internship Roles & Responsibilities - Marketing Ninja Creating marketing material, distribution, and blogging. Create press releases and sales scripts. Opportunity to work directly with founding team to develop innovative marketing strategies, and assure consistent messaging across the team. Excitement for writing key. Proficiency in video editing and/or adobe suite a plus. - Social Media / Public Relations Maven Loves to write and/or lives on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook (and may remember what Vine was). Takes pictures and video or many things and know how to create a following. Will work with team to reach learners who are interested n remixing their learning. Proficiency in video editing and/or adobe suite a plus. - Operations Guru Starts to twitch when files on their desktop are not in a folder or papers are not in a pile. Will work closely with the founders to coordinate meetings with the team, investors, and potential partners. Key in orchestrating the sales team and tracking all the moving pieces. Will get an in-depth look at the inner workings of start-up chaos. - Sales Hustler Securing partnerships with universities. Excited to meet new people and asks lots of questions to understand their needs. Will be key in influencing development of the sales development cycle and testing. Cold calling and cold emailing will be key. For ALL Positions We are an early stage start-up with a mission of bringing affordable education to the world. If this mission resonates with you, apply. An excitement for startups, passion for making a difference, and a fun attitude are key. Blue Skies

Description: Develop your skills in a company that is saving lives while making a profit. Blue Skies is developing products to reduce asthma and death from air pollution worldwide. Our first product is an attachment for baby strollers that filters asthma-causing traffic pollutants during an infant's critical first 12-18 months of lung development. Our patent-pending filter is the only low-profile filter capable of doing this. Asthma is the 4th highest cost medical problem in the US, costing $50B a year to manage. We are doing buy-one-give-one with a similar product to save lives from indoor air pollution in developing countries, where indoor air pollution is the leading cause of death of children under 5 worldwide. Internship Roles and Responsibilities: For all positions, we ask 8-12 hours a week commitment. The potential intern should demonstrate a keen interest in learning. The most successful applicants will have a sense of humor, and be very able to switch between being silly with the group and working seriously on a moment's notice. A passion for doing good in the world is necessary, since Blue Skies mission is more focused on impact.      Intern position 1: engineering. Learn Fusion 360 (CAD), 3D printing, and making silicone molds. Experience with some CAD program is required. You'll likely get an opportunity to visit some manufacturing sites. You'll be working directly with the CEO (engineering PhD student at Harvard). Sophomores and beyond can apply for this position.      Intern position 2: communications / marketing. Build our facebook/twitter following. Run instagram/pinterest as well. Engage with journalists and publications. Do some public outreach. This position has some guidance from the CEO and other team members, but is more autonomous. Anyone from freshman up can do this position.      Intern position 3: General startup stuff. Examples from our current intern: find sources of funding for interns and fill out all the forms, apply to various accelerators / pitch opportunities (a current intern is in China on a highly subsidized trip we found, learning to pitch), figuring out how to form a non-profit so we can take donations, and figuring out the pathway to medical device exemption from the FDA. These projects require a highly motivated, highly independent, and very detail-oriented person, and you'll pick up skills that are vital to future startups. This position is meant for juniors and seniors.

Gain Life

Gain Life Description Gain Life is taking psychological theories of behavior change and applying them to solve real world problems. Our first effort is aimed at combatting the growing problem of chronic disease due to excess weight. For the first time in human history, preventable chronic disease kills more people than infectious disease, which means the future of healthcare for 75% of adult Americans will be lifestyle change, not a pill or procedure. Our vision is to be the leader in helping people make lasting lifestyle change through behavioral medicine programs designed to combat chronic disease and reduce healthcare costs. We combine Procter & Gamble’s product development principles with science from The University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center to give individuals what they want (reduced health risks and weight loss) while building into the process what they really need (change in mindset). Internship Description In search of a detail-oriented, driven, self starter to assist with business development and partnership strategy projects across a fast growing consumer healthcare startup. We're looking for someone who is creative, motivated, and ready to play a big role on a high performing team.  Job Description: Work with our team to create our partnership strategy and brainstorm ways we can offer our services to best serve the population.  - Find leads, make connections, close deals, and help us change as many lives as possible. - Past interns have been tasked with helping us pitch to Fortune 100 companies, leading partnership initiatives with national organizations, and laying the groundwork for our fundraising strategy.  As for our company culture . . . We take our work seriously, not ourselves. We encourage the majority of our colleagues to work from wherever and (within reason) whenever works best for them. We’re fans of team lunches, working out, summer Fridays, and anything that involves friendly competition. We look to hire and promote “athletes”. These are exceptional individuals with the ability to be successful in a variety of roles; they have intangibles like leadership ability, business acumen, judgment, adaptability and humility. Qualifications - Easy going personality - Detail-oriented - Self-starter comfortable working autonomously  - Tech savvy (that doesn't mean you need to be a programmer)  - Willing to roll up your sleeves to do whatever it takes to get the job done (a workhorse mentality)  - Interested in working at a fast-moving startup

Boston Foods

Description: Are you ready to work hard and make a difference? At Boston Foods, you can see the direct impact of your work. And it’s an important impact - Boston Foods is a non-profit social business that provides healthy food that people love to low income families. Without our service, many families and children would not be able to afford the basic nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle. That serves as our motivation to continue to expand and improve our product to the best of our ability - and we could use your help. Boston Foods is a fast growing start-up, and as such there are many areas in which an intern could be asked to work. From marketing and public relations to creating nutritional reports and speaking to community center members, working with a non-profit start-up requires interns to be open to many possibilities. The team at Boston Foods will work with interns to tailor their day-to-day work to their interests, and interns will be trusted with more responsibility as they prove themselves capable. Each intern will be expected to visit our partner community centers over the course of their internship, and will be integral to organizing and executing Delivery Day - the monthly occasion on which we deliver our healthy, affordable grocery boxes to community centers. Boston Foods combines affordability, quality, and access in order to address the social issues that arise from malnutrition and inadequate food options. As a model driven by community service, Boston Foods is committed to providing customers with a consistent and high quality product. Processed and unhealthy foods are often cheaper than fresh food, and many low income areas are considered “food deserts” because there is little access to affordable and healthy groceries. We seek to alleviate this issue by partnering with Baldor Foods and community centers, such as Blackstone Community Center in Boston’s South End and the Cambridge Community Center, to cut out all the overhead found in grocery stores. By offering boxes of fruit, vegetables, and protein at fast food prices, our product is attractive to individuals of every financial situation thereby stimulating the greatest demand and serving the greatest number of people. Boston Foods makes it a priority to make the service personal and valuable. By partnering with Baldor Foods and consulting nutrition experts, we guarantee that we provide a healthy product in order to work toward our mission: fighting hunger and malnutrition. We pick up food from our provider the day of delivery to ensure the produce is fresh and the team personally organizes it to specific orders. By operating with efficiency in mind, we are able to minimize our costs to keep prices low. Through our sustainable, nutritious, and consistent service, hundreds of individuals in Boston and Cambridge have the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Acheivments:     1. Featured as an iLab VIP venture      2. Awarded grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield      3. Awarded grant from the Vela Foundation      4. Partnership with the Boston Housing Commission      5. Over 4,000 estimated meals served to date
